The twelve Desi months used in the Nanakshahi calendar are not arbitrary labels. Each name is tied to the season in which it falls, and together they trace the farming year of the Punjab.
The twelve months and their seasons
- Chet and Vaisakh bring Spring (16 March to 16 May).
- Jeth and Harh bring Summer (17 May to 17 July).
- Sawan and Bhadon bring Monsoon (18 July to 16 September).
- Assu and Katak bring Autumn (17 September to 15 November).
- Maghar, Poh, Magh and Phaggan bring Winter (16 November to 15 March).
Why the months match the weather
The Desi calendar grew out of farming life, so its months describe what is happening in the fields and the sky. Farmers still plan sowing and harvest around the Desi months, and in villages the time of year is often named by the Desi month rather than the Gregorian one.
Each of the twelve months has its own page here, with its number of days, its Gregorian dates and its season badge. Visit the Desi Month Name page to see all twelve at a glance, or check today's Desi date.
