The Desi date is the date used in the traditional calendar of the Punjab region. In everyday conversation people ask "today's Desi date kya hai?" to know the month and date according to the local calendar rather than the international Gregorian calendar.
The everyday Desi date on this site uses the Nanakshahi calendar. Nanakshahi is a solar calendar introduced in 2003 by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Its year 1 begins with the birth of Guru Nanak Sahib in 1469. The months follow the sun and always start on the same Gregorian dates.
The twelve Desi months are Chet, Vaisakh, Jeth, Harh, Sawan, Bhadon, Assu, Katak, Maghar, Poh, Magh, Phaggan.
Desi dates matter for festivals. Vaisakhi falls in Vaisakh, Teej in Sawan, and Maghi near the start of Magh. Farmers plan their seasons by the Desi months, and the weather in Punjab is often described by which Desi month it falls in.
